Color Guard / Winter Guard
Color Guard is a Sport of the Arts involving flags, rifles, sabers, and dance!
A year long course, there are two components. The first semester is outdoors on the football field with the marching band. As part of the South Pasadena Marching Band & Color Guard, the group participates in competitions held by the Western Band Association (WBA) along with performances for football halftimes. During the second semester, the guard moves indoors and performs without the band to prerecorded music. The Winter Guard team competes in the Scholastic A division of the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC) circuit. South Pasadena Winter Guard is an award-winning team – having been gold medalists in past years. Note: This course can satisfy the SPHS Physical Education (PE) requirement in lieu of a traditional PE class with full participation in all practices, competitions, and activities (fall semester only). This course is traditionally offered during 8th period.
For students who are considering joining, no prior experience is required. Students will receive training in marching, reading drill charts, counting music, and learning to use the body in order to properly perform a field tournament show. Students will learn how to control their body through the use of technique exercises in the areas of dance, and choreography with the use of equipment such as flag, rifle, saber, props, etc. Students will learn leadership, responsibility and work ethic skills that may be applied throughout their academic career.
